Riddles: Extension of rope (Question)

 

We have two ropes.

 

One rope is placed around the Earth (40,000 km circumference)

The other rope is placed around a soccer ball (70 cm circumference)

 

Each rope is extended by 1 meter and is placed evenly around the circumference of the Earth and the soccer ball. See sketch for soccer ball with the extended rope around it:

 

 

The question is:

 

Which distance will be greatest – the distance from the surface of the soccer ball and the rope or the distance from the surface of the Earth and the rope? And why is this the case?
